S’porean dads more involved in child’s health development: survey
SINGAPORE: A new study has shown that fathers in Singapore are more clued in and involved in their child’s health development than previously thought.
They play keys roles in everything from their kids’ nutritional choices to exercise options, according to the findings are part of a survey of 300 fathers, mothers and children in May.
Two in three Singaporean fathers polled in the "Jacob’s Healthy Fathers, Healthy Families" survey are actively involved in either doing the family groceries or in the preparation of family meals.
It is Jacob’s first study designed to look into the role that fathers play in the nutrition and health of their children.
Dads monitor their kids eating habits closely, with six in 10 aware of what their child might have had for lunch the day before.
Mums agreed, scoring dads a high seven out of 10 in their level of nutritional awareness.
Two—thirds of fathers polled exercised regularly with their children, and a third played sports with them at least once a week.
It is a trend that has been reflected in other parts of the world, like Australia, where a 2008 study showed that it was Dad that set the example for healthy living and exercise.
Feedback from kids polled also reflected this — at least a third of the kids polled ranked sports, playing video games and watching television programmes as activities they want to do with Dad.
Lim Soon Hock, chairman of the Centre for Fathering and a father of three, said the role of dads is often underestimated.
They actually wield a lot more influence than they think, and play more than a supplementary role to their spouses.
But finding the time to spend with their kids still remains a challenge — with most managing only an hour a day in the evenings.
The Centre for Fathering said that a more flexible environment at work — with paternity leave for example — helps greatly in encouraging shared parenting.
Andrew Thomas, Centre for Fathering Singapore, says: "What has to happen is there has to be more understanding and flexible time when a new baby is born into a family so the employer being understanding to that — so from the studies that we’ve done, any employer that behaves in an inclusive way when the family is under stress from a new baby it pays back in dividends multiple times over."
